Foreshadow: The Shadow of Metaphor

The Shadow of Metaphor is a zine that explores the metaphors of illness embedded in our daily language and visual culture. It examines how diseases often function as adjectives rather than nouns—as vessels of collective perception and social meaning rather than mere medical conditions. Illness, in this sense, becomes a mode of expression, a rhetorical device.

The project comprises a collaboratively written fiction The Names of Disease and a series of illustrations centered on heart disease, cancer, and Alzheimer’s. Structured as a stage dialogue, the fiction deconstructs the metaphors and stereotypes of illness, creating a reading experience akin to solving a riddle. The illustration section incorporates excerpts from interviews with patients and caregivers, extending the visual narrative. As an extension of the publication, several illustrations have also been made into puzzles.
