Recommend 100 books to the owners of 100 bags.

A bittersweet reflection on the joy of art book fairs—and the melancholy of their decline.

Over the past few years, while tabling at book fairs, we quietly photographed the backpacks of visitors. Could reading the personality of someone's bag be enough to recommend the perfect book?

The three of us each selected around thirty of these photographs and drew, on the reverse side of each image, the book we most wanted to recommend to its owner. The result is this catalog pairing 100 bags with 100 books.

At a book fair, books and bags stand for its two essential participants: creators and readers. Together, they form the two sides of the same ecosystem.

In today's social climate, where people and communities can so easily disappear or become scattered, we intentionally bound the pages with a fragile structure. The book's true cover is not a cover at all, but a custom-made bag designed specifically to hold it. The book lives inside the bag.

That's why it's called BOOG—a book inside a bag.
